Kitchen renovation started yesterday.

All the living room and dining room furniture is in storage for the duration. All the kitchen stuff is lined up on the floor of the living room. The breakable stuff – including these vintage Pyrex mixing bowls – are in the “safety zone” which is the area behind plastic storage tubs that are filled with other stuff. (Other stuff = wine bottles and jars and jars of homemade pickles.)

The new year is off to an interesting start.

My resolution: to avoid emotional breakdowns while the project is underway!

ALSO: I meant to post this on my 2012 project site, so please go over there if you want to see the current project. Thanks. And for the record, I also avoided an emotional breakdown when I realized I’d posted this in the wrong place. Please be proud of me….

The end of this journal.

Many years ago, toward the end of the year, I was complaining to my friend Carlos about what a crappy year it had been. He pointed out, correctly, that I thought it was bad because I was letting myself focus on the bad parts, rather than the good ones. He then issued me a challenge: to write down one good thing every day for a year.

It’s not much of an over-dramatization to say that his words helped me to have a new outlook on my life and on the things that are going on around me.

The journal shown above is one I started on January 1, 2007, and will retire today.

Sample entries:

March 11, 2009: It’s been a frustrating and maddening week at work, so I did NOTHING at home tonight. It was fabulous.

August 27, 2011: What a fine day! WE took the bus across town, to the ocean side, and did a three mile hike on a cliff above the sea. Too foggy to see the Golden Gate Bridge but still an excellent day.

March 14, 2007: Made plans for Blamorhea for my birthday weekend – looking forward to getting some of the old building between Pecos and Balmorhea photographed for my new project.

June 18, 2007: Hannah Ruth Harvey. 7 pounds, 7 ounces. 11:48 a.m. 20.5″ long. Beautiful and healthy.

November 21, 2010: Hannah, to me, when she woke up from her nap: I love my WHOLE family.

I hope you get the idea. And I will be always grateful to Carlos for his kindness and wisdom.
